Apunipima Media Release - Red Cross Opening

Apunipima offers its congratulations to the Red Cross on the opening of their Cairns - based Wellbeing Centre, Pat Gosper Place.

The 44 room centre, located across the road from Cairns Hospital, offers accommodation and support to people from rural and remote areas who have travelled to Cairns for medical treatment.

Apunipima offers a free seven day a week bus service for people who travel to Cairns from the Cape for medical treatment. Last month around 100 people used the Client Transport Service – those travelling in February may have the option to stay at Pat Gosper Place.

Apunipima CEO Cleveland Fagan said the new facility will support improved health outcomes for remote patients.

"Apunipima, along with other health stakeholders are working hard to make patient travel as seamless and stress free as possible. Our free seven day a week Client Transport Service to eligible, Cape York - based patients helps them get around when they’re in Cairns. This is just one small part of the patient journey. A bigger part is facilities such as Pat Gosper Place which offer a comfortable and supportive environment for those who come to Cairns from the Cape and other rural and remote areas. Having a home away from home supports improved health outcomes by removing the stress associated with finding and paying for accommodation. We congratulate the Red Cross on their new facility and welcome the role it will play in supporting better health outcomes for remote patients."
